Being a Leader….

I have attended different conferences, seminars, and worshops about being a leader or leadership quailities.  Some of the information I gathered  just described part of the type of leader I am.  Before I looked for quotes or stories to share in todays post, I looked up leadership and  found a great quote.

Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. —Jack Welch

Then I took this quote and googled it to find out more information about the person, and I came across an article in Dr. Melanie Greenberg – Psychology Today which used this quote.  In reading just a few sentences I was intrigued because the article was describing qualities I possessed as a leader.  When I completed reading the article, I was stunned how I had finally found a summary that detailed the type of leader I am.  The article was describing a “new thinking” on leadership, but these were qualities I always had.

Below are the 6 qualities the article describes that leaders need to be successful:

  1. Authentic
  2. Connection
  3. Reliable
  4. Open
  5. Competent
  6. Compassionate

I counted a few more from the article:

  1. Inspiring
  2. Dedicated
  3. Communicator
  4. Dedicated

My personal own favorite “Sense of Humor” and “Patience”.

Here are some parts of Dr. Greenberg’s article which stood out the most to me:

  •  A good leader needs to demonstrate that he lives by the same principles and rules that he expects of followers.
  • Great leaders speak to the best in us – they inspire us to reach for the stars and to become what we dream of being.
  • Good leaders take the time to listen to, and connect emotionaly with followers at all levels. They demonstrate that they understand and empathize with followers’ concerns, values, priorities, and aspirations.
  • The best leaders show passion, commitment, and dedication.
  • A key quality of leadership is the ability to inspire others through emotional connection as well as rational arguments and explanation.
  • Great leadership involves bringing out the best in your followers.

Here’s another inspiring quote:

“Leadership is not so much about technique and methods as it is about opening the heart. Leadership is about inspiration—of oneself and of others. Great leadership is about human experiences, not processes. Leadership is not a formula or a program, it is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of others. It is an attitude, not a routine.”
